How to Design a YouTube Thumbnail: Size and Tips
1280 × 720 pixels, text that reads on small screens, contrast and the area covered by the duration label: the basics of thumbnails that get clicked.

Whether a video gets watched is often decided in the second someone looks at its thumbnail. Thumbnails appear very small in search results, recommendations and on phones, so a good one must make sense at a glance, even tiny.
Size and format
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Size | 1280 × 720 pixels |
| Ratio | 16:9 |
| Minimum width | 640 pixels |
| Format | JPG, PNG or GIF |
Design at 1280 × 720 pixels and compress the file so it stays under YouTube's upload limit. You may need a verified account to upload custom thumbnails.
Make it readable when small
- Use few words: a bold, large headline of no more than 3–5 words.
- Don't repeat the title: the video title already sits next to the thumbnail; the text should complement it.
- Pick one focal point: busy thumbnails don't read at small sizes.
Contrast and color
The thumbnail should stand out in YouTube's light and dark themes and among other thumbnails. Use strong contrast between text and background; a dark band or shadow behind text on a bright photo improves legibility.
Keep the bottom-right corner clear
The video's duration appears in a label in the bottom-right corner. Don't put important text or elements there.
Consistency
Using the same typeface, colors and layout across your channel's thumbnails helps viewers recognize your videos in recommendations.
A practical workflow
- Design on a 1280 × 720 canvas.
- Check the thumbnail scaled down (e.g. 320 pixels wide): is the text still readable?
- Reduce the file size.
To crop an existing image to thumbnail size, use the YouTube thumbnail preset in the Social Media Image Resizer, and shrink the file with the Image Compressor.
