Frequently asked questions

Does compressing an image reduce its quality?

Lossy compression (JPG and WEBP) removes very fine detail, but at 75-85% quality the difference is usually invisible. Check the preview and adjust the quality to your needs.

What is the best image format for websites?

For photos, WEBP usually gives the best result: according to Google's measurements it is about 25-34% smaller than JPG at the same quality, and every modern browser supports it. For graphics that need transparency, use WEBP or PNG.

Why didn't my PNG get smaller?

PNG is lossless, so re-saving it in the same format rarely reduces its size. In that case the tool keeps your original file. For a smaller file, switch the output to WEBP or (if there's no transparency) JPG.

What happens to the location and camera data in my photos?

Because compressed images are re-encoded, EXIF metadata (location, camera model, date) is not carried over. This reduces the size and protects your privacy.
